SPANISH NIGHTS

AWAY MATCH v BANKS O’DEE FC
BREEDON HIGHLAND LEAGUE
SPAIN PARK, ABERDEEN  AB12 3AB
WEDNESDAY 18 MARCH 2025 – KICK OFF 8pm

It’s on the bus and over the hills and far away to Spain Park in Aberdeen for our second meeting this season in the Breedon Highland League  against Banks O’Dee. We were meant to visit just before Christmas but our squad was struck down by the flu bug and we had to ask for permission from the Highland League for postponement of the game much to Banks O’ Dee’s chagrin.
However, Wednesday night’s game is now the main focus  and we travel there on the back of three straight victories so there will be confidence within the team but, after all the games being played throughout the league by all teams, all players and managerial teams are beginning to feel the effects of Wednesday/Saturday fixtures.
Although Banks sit in sixth place in the league, with forty-eight points from twenty-seven games, they probably feel that they could have done a bit better, but as I say constantly this season there have been strange results with very few games being routs so I am surmising that this game will be pretty close and as both teams have played four games in March already, fitness levels could play a big part.
We met at Seafield Park in August in what was a really difficult day to play football with very strong gusts of wind and both teams struggled with the conditions. It took nearly eighty minutes for the deadlock to be broken when we succumbed to a killer five minutes or so losing two goals – compounded by a very controversial penalty decision resulting in a 3-0 loss to the The Jags – however had we been given what was, especially to the home support and players, a stonewall penalty late in the first half who knows how the game would have panned out.

As ever we wish Aaron, JLF and the boys all the best on their trip to Aberdeen in what will be a very hard game.

SATURDAY’S HOME MATCH v WICK ACADEMY

Although a cold crosswind hampered temperatures it wasn’t too bad a day for fitba’.
The Jags had the better of the first half and Andrew Macleod’s cool drive into the Wick net twenty-five minutes in and that was how it remained until half time.

Action in the Wick goalmouth.

After the break Wick brought on 16yr old Jamie Steven who in all the Jags’ committee and spectators opinions is destined for big things in football. For a good part of the second half Wick were threatening but the Jags’ defence again put in a great shift and after eighty minutes Calum Brown secured the points outrunning the Wick defence and slotting the ball past the keeper.

Andrew Macleod and Calum Brown

Aaron Doran in an interview with the P&J said it was a good performance and that we are getting better, and meaner to opposing teams and was delighted with the clean sheet.

Another historic win – that was the first time in our Highland League history that we have won three games in a row….and we now sit in eleventh place in the league on thirty seven points – again our best ever total – so well done to Aaron, JLF and the boys for another excellent performance!!

MOTM

DJ, Calum and Darren.

Calum Brown was voted man of the match and is pictured here with DJ and son, Darren MacIntyre, both Ross County fans but are enjoying their visits to Seafield Park more and more and we look forward to seeing them again soon.

HALF TIME RAFFLE
This week’s winner was Strathy Jags’ supporter supreme and friend of the Club – Davie Milne.

The legend that is Davie Milne.

Davie, who is always accompanied by his daughter Lindsay to every home match, was delighted with his win and so were we!

WICK-ED WINDOWS

HOME MATCH v WICK ACADEMY FC
BREEDON HIGHLAND LEAGUE
SEAFIELD PARK, GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY, PH26 3HE
SATURDAY 14 MARCH 2026 – KO 2PM

On Saturday we welcome players, officials and supporters of Wick Academy FC to Seafield Park.
Our last meeting in October resulted in a ninety-third minute winner for Wick in a very closely contested match. Josh Race had equalised for us with an excellent goal in the second half after Wick, who were the best team in the first half had scored just on half-time. We then missed a glorious chance to take the lead but paid for it in the dying seconds.
Wick who sit below us in fifteenth place on twenty-four points have, like a lot of HL teams this season have had a mixed bag of results and arrive in Grantown on the back of narrow home defeat by a much improved Keith side, so again we will expect a very tough match.
Wick may be the fresher team as they did not have a mid-week fixture but as ever we wish Aaron, JLF and the boys all the best and a win would give us three wins out of four for the new management team.

If any of the Wick travelling support wants a resumé of what’s available in Grantown – click here – our Snack Bar situated in the ground serves non-alcoholic beverages and foodstuffs and, in addition, is our Mackellar Suite, also situated within the ground, and is available for pre and aprés match alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and foodstuffs.

This is our last game at home until 28 March when we host Inverurie Loco Works, and we’re now on the road visiting Banks O’Dee, Nairn and Keith.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S GAME v BUCKIE THISTLE

Well, another night when history was made in the story of Strathspey Thistle.

Goalscorer Caelan Mutch is congratulated by Shaun Morrison (18) after putting the Jags 2-1 up against Buckie – 11/03/26

We reached thirty-four league points, one point ahead of our best ever total of thirty-three in back in 2018, and we still have eight games to play…
Secondly, this is the first season that we beat Buckie Thistle twice in a season – and according to Club historian Rob Clark even as a junior club we were never able to beat Buckie Rovers twice in a season either.

On a bitterly, bitterly cold night with a howling wind and rain threatening many Strathy Jags supporters must have been wondering whether their choice of live football – or a night at the television with a roaring fire and a Champions League match on the telly was a wise decision. Come full time at Seafield Park all the shivers and cold feet were wll and truly worth it as the Strathy Jags ran out 2-1 winners.

The first half was probably shaded by Buckie although both teams had their chances but it was probably the wind that won.
Two minutes after the break Bodhan Campbell, who was on loan at Seafield Park earlier in the season put Buckie ahead, and were looking to double their lead until the seventy-second minute when Calum Brown equalised with a low drive from inside the box.

Caelan Mutch and Calum Brown.

Possibly against the run of play, this goal rejuvenated the home side and were the better team over the last twenty minutes or so and deserved their second when Zach Macphee’s cross ball was met by Caelan Mutch at the far post – and so it remained until full time.
Two wins out of three for the new management team – onwards and upwards!!

HALF-TIME RAFFLE WINNER

The winner of the Half-Time Raffle was Angus Macleod, who hails from Stornoway.
Angus is the father of Ross County loanee Andrew Macleod, and he was making his way home from his job off-shore and, as he realised the ferries would be cancelled decided to stay in Inverness and take in the Buckie game en route.
Angus donated his winnings back to the club in a very generous gesture and we appreciate it tremendously.
Angus was saying that he retires in a couple of months time – we wish him well – and hopefully see him back at Seafield Park sometime in the future.

LOTTERY

Last week our lottery jackpot was again won by a ticket sold in Aviemore.

The winning numbers were 6-8-10-16-20 and Barry Wass who was holidaying Aviemore bought a paper ticket from Jim Seaton, our seller in Aviemore. Barry won the £1100 jackpot – Congratulations Barry and we hope you enjoy your winnings!
So this weekend the jackpot has returned to £1000 and if you want to have a chance of winning click here…

GIVE ME THE NIGHT

HOME MATCH v BUCKIE THISTLE FC
BREEDON HIGHLAND LEAGUE
SEAFIELD PARK, GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY, PH26 3HE
WEDNESDAY 11 MARCH 2026 – KO 8pm

On Wednesday night we welcome players, officials and supporters of Buckie Thistle FC to Seafield Park for our rearranged match in the Breedon Highland League. The match has been put off twice so hopefully third time lucky!
Buckie currently sit in eighth place in the league with forty-one points from twenty-eight games which is six places above us and ten points ahead but have had a bit of a topsy-turvy season winning twelve, losing eleven and drawing five which includes a 4-1 defeat in our the last league game we played way back in August, which was at the time possibly our best result since entering the league in season 2009/2010 – so I am sure they will be out for a bit of revenge.

Buckie’s visit in December 2020 – remember covid!

However with three losses a draw and a win in their last five games, admittedly in a tough run of fixtures and with ourselves winning two out of our last three the scene will be set for what I reckon will be a very tough evening but there is every possibility of achieving at least a point under the Seafield Park floodlights in Strathy Jags’ head coach Aaron Doran’s target of a minimum of forty points this season – a season which has been fascinating.
If any of the Buckie travelling support wants a resumé of what’s available in Grantown – click here – our Snack Bar situated in the ground has non-alcoholic beverages and foodstuffs and, in addition, is our Mackellar Suite, also situated within the ground, and is available for pre and aprés match alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and foodstuffs.
As ever we wish Aaron, JLF and the boys all the best.

SATURDAY’S MATCH AT INVERURIE
On Saturday we headed to Harlaw Park, Inverurie after our morale bruising match against Clach when a red card spoiled what could have been a decent result for the Jags’ but that’s another story. How would the boys cope – well, very well actually.
Locos were the first club to visit Seafield Park in August 2009 in our first season in the Highland League and over the years had never beaten them.
In the first half both managers concluded we were the better team with Caelan Mutch driving a home a cracker of a shot midway through the first half taking us into the break one up.
We went two ahead in fifty minutes courtesy of an own goal by Taylor Chapman.
Locos then made four changes which worked and after seventy-five minutes the scores were level at 2-2.
However, in the last minute universally accepted best player on the park, Andrew Macleod scored the winner with an excellently taken free kick giving us all three points in what was by all accounts an exciting game.

So, history made, our first ever win against Locos and hopefully we can keep up the winning formula for Wednesday.

STRATHSPEY THISTLE:
Lewis Munro (GK), Cammy Lisle, Zach MacPhee, Jamie Calder, James McShane(c), Rorie Macleod, Jamie Williamson, Daniel Whitehorn, Andrew Macleod, Caelan Mutch and Calum Brown.
Subs : Scot Docherty, Aly Morrison, Bailey Black, Josh Race and Robbie Flett(GK).

REMEMBER OUR NEXT GAME IS ON SATURDAY WITH ANOTHER HOME MATCH THIS TIME AGAINST WICK ACADEMY FC.

PEACE TRAIN

AWAY MATCH v INVERURIE LOCO WORKS FC
BREEDON HIGHLAND LEAGUE
HARLAW PARK, INVERURIE AB51 4SG
SATURDAY 7 MARCH 2026 – KICK OFF 3pm

Saturday takes us to Harlaw Park Inverurie for our first Breedon Highland League meeting of the season against Inverurie Loco Works FC – thanks to various weathers over the past few months.

©Rob A Clark

Locos are not having their best season, although Wednesday night’s result against Rothes will have brightened things a wee bit.
Currently sitting in sixteenth place in the league with twenty-one points from twenty-five games, not a position Locos are used to as they are usually found in the the top five so they are, I imagine, going through a period of transition.
We as usual expect a very tough game but hopefully we leave Inverurie with at least a point.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S GAME v CLACHNACUDDIN.
On a pleasant night for football we welcomed fourth placed Clachnacuddin to Seafield Park night .
The first half was by and large pretty equal, Clach had one or two half chances and on thirty-four minutes the Clach post came to their rescue after a rasping James McShane drive and so it remained goalless until half-time.
After the interval Clach were perhaps the better team but the Jags’ defence were coping admirably – until the seventy-fifth minute when the referee was instructed of some incident concerning the home number five by the stand side assistant referee and from that he was shown the red card for pushing an opponent – I was one of the many spectators who were bamboozled by the decision as no-one knew what it was for – a decision that proved decisive in the following ten minutes and the final score ……three goals in the following ten minutes……resulting in a three-nil win for Clach.

The Jags were obviously shell shocked probably by the decision and by what transpired afterwards……….anyway onwards and upwards.
It was interesting to see three ex-Jags in the Clach squad – the recently transferred Conor MacPhee and Jack Davison who came on as substitute for Ross Logan on sixty-three minutes.
Jags’ loanee keeper Lewis Munro impressed on his debut as did the entire defence with Dean Stewart, before his red card, immense IMHO.

Strathspey Thistle :
Lewis Munro (GK), Aly Morrison, Zach MacPhee, Jamie Calder, Dean Stewart, Jamie Williamson, Rorie Macleod, James McShane(C), Shaun Morrison, Andrew Macleod and Calum Brown.
Subs : Robert Flett(GK), Josh Race, Scot Docherty, Daniel Whitehorn, Cammy Lisle, Bailey Black and Caelan Mutch.

HALF-TIME RAFFLE WINNER

Frank Finlayson, a Clach supporter from Inverness was happy to have his picture taken after winning our Half-Time Raffle.

He seems to have a bit of a knack of winning away from home as he has already been successful at Nairn and Lochee over the past couple of seasons.
Enjoy your winnings Frank – see you next season!

WORM MOON

During the first half spectators were treated to a fantastic worm moon.

Worm Moon 04/03/26 …not bad from an iPhone!

Looking at the photograph it reminds me of the “Spot The Ball” in the Green Final!

ROLL AWAY THE STONE

HOME MATCH v CLACHNACUDDIN FC
BREEDON HIGHLAND LEAGUE
SEAFIELD PARK, GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY, PH26 3HE
WEDNESDAY 4 MARCH 2026 – KO 8pm

Well that was a big surprise  -9 degrees on Friday night put paid to last Saturday’s match against Fraserburgh so with both ourselves and Clach missing our matches on Saturday because of the weather, both will be raring to go under the floodlights of Seafield Park, one of seven re-scheduled games in the Breedon Highland League being played on Wednesday.  Wednesday night football is going to become a regular feature over the next six weeks or so, especially for ourselves as the above mentioned Fraserburgh game has been re-scheduled for Wednesday 1 April.

So, we welcome players, officials and supporters of Clachnacuddin FC making the relatively short journey from Inverness for our second league meeting of the season.
Our visit to Grant Street Park was not one of our finest back in August and resulting in a bit of a battering so hopefully we can re-establish some of our pride on Wednesday night.
Clach currently sit in a very creditable fourth place in the league on fifty points from twenty-five games and losing only twice since the turn of the year,. Their last loss was a couple of weeks ago at home to Keith, so it’s going to be another very tough game but one hopefully we can acquit ourselves well.
If any of the Clach travelling support wants a resumé of what’s available in Grantown – click here – our Snack Bar situated in the ground has non-alcoholic beverages and foodstuffs and, in addition, is our Mackellar Suite, also situated within the ground, and is available for pre and aprés match alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and foodstuffs.

This will be head coach Aaron Doran’s second game in charge and will have more or less a full squad to choose from – as ever we wish him and the boys all the best.

SATURDAY’S GAME v FRASERBURGH
After a night of nearly -9 degrees of frost there was a hurriedly arranged pitch inspection at nine-thirty am and it was decided by HL referee Stephen McDade that there would be no football that day as the pitch was frozen, which was a great disappointment for everyone associated with the Jags but especially for John McManus from Essex and Jack Hannah from North Yorkshire.

Jack and John who had “adopted” the Jags as their Scottish club shortly after covid, had arranged with our secretary Clive Wolstenholme for their visit last weekend but their hopes of attending the game were dashed by Mother Nature.
They did however manage the Forres v Nairn game on the Saturday and a visit to Dufftown on Sunday and one of my spies told me they also enjoyed their meal at Grantown’s Indian Restaurant on Sunday night.
Their previous visit was three seasons ago according to Clive, who they regularly keep in touch with, but their next visit will be for a match in the summer, possibly in August. when we look forward to welcoming them again to Seafield Park.
We thank them very much for their support.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

CLIVE’S NEWSLETTER – FEBRUARY 2026

Tuesday 3rd: Liam Shewan became the latest player to sign a new STFC contract, agreeing a two-year contract extension with the club.

Wednesday 4th: A hard-fought game in difficult conditions away to Deveronvale saw the Jags’ beaten by a late winner for the home side.
Andrew Macleod had drawn us level early in the second-half and manager Ryan Esson told the Press & Journal afterwards: “I’m really disappointed because I thought we played really well and created plenty of chances but we didn’t take them and we were punished.”

Saturday 7th: A tough afternoon at Brora Rangers as the league leaders took out their frustrations on the Jags following a shock midweek defeat at home to Nairn.
Brora led by four goals to one at half-time, Josh Race scoring for STFC, and added a further three after the break, captain James McShane receiving a red card to compound the Jags’ woes.

Sunday 8th: The long wait is over and the celebrations can begin. Not Scotland qualifying for the World Cup, but the Jags lottery jackpot has finally been won!
Congratulations to Kirsty Almond from Burnley who has scooped the rollover prize of £14,900. For details of how the club lottery will now operate, following the jackpot win, click here.

Thursday 12th: 28-year-old defender Dean Stewart, a former Jags loanee, returned to the club on a permanent basis, signing from New Elgin FC on a contract running until 2028.
Manager Ryan Esson told the STFC website that Dean would “add real competition and strength to our back line”.

Saturday 14th: Seafield Park looked a picture (above) but more suited to the Winter Olympics after a sharp overnight frost and temperatures of -7 caused the postponement of the scheduled home fixture with Inverurie Loco Works.

Wednesday 18th: Another postponement, unfortunately, this time as the game against Buckie Thistle fell foul of a frozen pitch and continued the long wait for a home fixture.

Thursday 19th: Goalkeeper Lewis Munro joined the Jags on a one-month loan deal from Nairn County to provide cover and competition between the sticks.

Saturday 21st: An afternoon to forget for the Jags as they conceded three goals in each half away to Forres Mechanics to fall to a heavy 6-0 defeat.

Monday 23rd: STFC announced the departure of manager Ryan Esson and assistant manager Don Johnstone with Aaron Doran taking the reins until the end of the season, assisted by James Lee Fraser.

Wednesday 25th: A first home game at Seafield Park for over two months and plenty of excitement as the Jags defeated Rothes 3-2.
Josh Race, Shaun Morrison and Dean Stewart scored for the home side in an action-packed first half that twice saw bottom club Rothes equalise as they played their part in a very entertaining game.
New manager Aaron told the Strathspey Herald that: “I said to the lads before the game that this is our home patch, and we want to make it really difficult for teams to pick up points here.”

Saturday 28th: The visit of Fraserburgh was due to bring the month to a close but a sharp drop in overnight temperatures meant the Seafield Park pitch was frozen and saw the game called off. That leaves the Jags with eleven matches still to play, plenty of time to add to our current tally of twenty-eight points.

Upcoming home matches
